According to historian John Robinson, the name "Icehouse Canyon" dates from the 1860s when an ice plant in the lower part of the canyon supplied ice to valley residents. The ice business is long gone but the name is still fitting as frigid air often blows through the canyon and can even chill the hiker on an early summer morning. It is also said that the cedar beams for Mission San Gabriel (1771) came out of Icehouse Canyon.

You will need to buy at least a day pass (Forest Adventure Pass) or take your chances. It’s available for $5 at Mount Baldy Lodge across from the ranger station in the village.
Start up the trail, hike, hike, hike until you come to a cabin with two trees growing right up through the roof. On the uphill side of the trail is a utility pole with a short pole next to it. Keep going 160 steps to a large boulder. Just before you get to the big boulder on the left and the second cabin, there are three rocks in a row heading vertically uphill. Look between the second and third rock under a smaller rock and debris.
There is another, much older box a little further up this trail.
