Many happy hikers have enjoyed the beauty of the Black Creek Trail, constructed between 1979 and 1982. The trail (exclusively for hikers) is 40.8 miles and will take you along a well blazed path with white paint rectangles. Eighty-two bridges, from 6' to 42' long, take you across streamlets and ravines. The terrain is varied, but, at times, there are numerous short and sometimes steep ups and downs along the entire route.
You will proceed south from Hattiesburg, MS on Hwy 49S until you reach the sign that says 'Brooklyn next left'. Turn left going to the flashing light in downtown Brooklyn. Turn left onto Main Drive and proceed over the railroad tracks. Go straight past the cemetery onto Ashe Nursery Road. At the entrance of Ashe Lake Recreation area, take a left onto 319 (this is a gravel road). You will pass Plum Nearly Road and Andrews Road. Go down and up a hill and turn left onto Forest Service Road 319G. It is approximately 1/2 mile to the Black Creek Trail. Park at the trail. Your destination is 8/10 of a mile from here.
Put on your hiking shoes and head east on the trail. Enjoy your walk and as you are heading down a steep hill, notice the beautiful Palmetto--this is about as far west as you will find from Florida. Cross the foot bridge, pause and enjoy the small, beautiful creek. Then it is up, up and then up some more to the crest of a hill. You are now .80 miles from your vehicle. Look to the left and you will find a small scarred Magnolia in th side of the hill. Go to the left down the left ridge to a larger Magnolia and then 20ft to the left is a 2ft tall burned lighter stump. At the base of this stump, you will find the Happy Hiker.
