Clues are easy and straightforward; terrain is gentle and even, with a bit of a hill; it should take 1 to 2 hours depending on your pace -- approximately 2 miles round trip.

I work at this beautiful, natural area, so I must stress that the trails are open from dawn to dusk and are free for members of Mass Audubon with their card. There is a nominal trail fee for non-members -- $4 for adults, $2 for children and seniors. Maps are available at the nature center from 9am to 5pm weekdays, 10am to 4pm on weekends. Stop in at the nature center and sign in. The staff and volunteers can set you on the right trail.

A downloadable version of the map and driving directions are also available at the Moose Hill website.

From the north:
From I 95 south, take exit 10 (Coney Street, Sharon, Walpole)
Take a left off the ramp (you'll start to see the blue triangle Mass Audubon signs here)
Take the first right onto High Plain Street (Rt. 27).
After approximately a half a mile take a left onto Moose Hill Street.
Follow the winding road until it intersects with Moose Hill Parkway.
Take a left onto the parkway and a left into the parking lot.

From the south:
From I 95 north, take exit 8 (Main Street Sharon)
Take a right off the ramp (you'll start to see the blue triangle Mass Audubon signs here)
Go one mile and take a left onto Moose Hill Street.
Go straight across Walpole Street (the road zigzags over to the left a bit).
Stay on Moose Hill Street until it intersects with Moose Hill Parkway.
Take a right onto the Parkway and a left into the parking lot.

From the nature center follow the map across the street to the stone pillars that mark the beginning of the Billings Trail. Follow the Billings trail straight (heading west) until you come to a "T" in the trail where you have to turn one way or the other. Choose the path to the right which will put you on the Moose Hill loop. Almost immediately the Moose Hill loop turns hard to the left and up the hill. Keep following the Moose Hill loop.

You will come to a trail intersection with a tree growing in the middle of a triangular 'median strip'. Bear left here onto the Old Pasture Trail. After a short way you will come to another intersection. Take the Forest Loop Trail to the right. The Forest loop travels straight for a while and then splits into its 'loop' part. Take the right path of the loop.

Breathe deeply of the wonderful woodland scent as it gets fern-ier and fern-ier. Keep an eye out for a stone wall. It's the first wall you come to on this side of the loop. Standing at the stone wall, take 8 steps along the stone wall off the trail to the right (east) side of the trail. Look for the Fertile Frond box in the south facing side of the wall.

After stamping in, why not take on the challenge of Lonemasswolf's and You Inspire My Spirit's Moose Hill letterbox series?

Happy Boxing!
