Driving Hwy 50 east, about 31 miles beyond Placerville, you come to Silver Fork. Not much to see but a gas station & mini-mart. And, just before the businesses, a big beautiful totem pole carved in 1997 out of a standing tree trunk. (I wanted to plant the box near the pole, but just learned a hard lesson with Pony Express Postmark, so you will have to take a bit more of an adventure.) Stop and admire the pole, then continue east a mile to Silverfork Rd. (just past Kyburz).
Turn right and follow Silverfork Rd. through the private section, through a pipe gate, into the forest area, about a mile up from the highway. You will see a post on the right--MP 1--and on the left just past the post a place to park off the road. Park there and walk on up the road 40 steps or so to a rocky outcropping and sight of a burned stump on the left. Climb up to the stump, and sight cedar tree at 75, then up beyond it about the same distance in the same line, a scrubby small oak in the rocks. On the street side of a big-breadbox-sized rock under the oak, and under rocks, bark & leaf litter, is your Totem. Please re-hide well!
*About a half mile beyond this parking spot is a safe turnaround. The road may be too narrow and windy for very large trailers or RVs.*
If you have the time and the inclination to continue up Silverfork Road, there are campgrounds, then the road follows a stream (Silver Fork?) that cascades through granite pools. You will come to a place where you can park and explore the pools. The road goes all the way to Hwy 88 and pops you out somewhere west of the Carson Spur. I think even west of Silver Lake. When I take the trouble to look at a map I will update these clues! It's a fun backroad, but I don't think they plow it in the winter, so this is probably a three season box.
