This is a 1000 step hike (includes return) with a 200 ft altitude gain.
The hike starts from the parking lot on Kanan Road, across from Newton Canyon Road, about 8 miles south of the Kanan Road FWY 101 exit in Agoura Hills (tunnel T1 is visible from the parking lot).
Proceed uphill parallel to the road south on the Backbone Trail (there is a sign; do not go West). Once it crosses the tunnel, count the live trees on the left side of the trail that are within 25 feet of the trail.
The letterbox is in the trunk of the second tree, about 500 steps from the parking lot, just outside the NPS area.
With another 850 steps on the Backbone trail you would arrive at a nice meadow with a great view on the ocean.
This trail is heavily used by bikers.
For a longer hike you could continue East on the Backbone trail to Latigo Canyon (2.6 miles), and even further, to Malibu Canyon (for a total of about 8.5 miles). For a map use the "Trail map of the Santa Monica Mountains Central", ISBN 1-877689-30-0. This can be obtained in person from the National Park Visitor Center(see http://www.nps.gov/samo/)
