Lumbertown Series #1 (of 4)

THIS BOX IS CURRENTLY MISSING (Summer 2005). (New note, Summer 2006 - I hope to recarve and replant this stamp later this summer. The placard in this park is interesting, and in the vicinity of two other of my letterboxes. If you're nearby, drive through and read a bit about Muskegon's lumbering past.)

Richards Park, Muskegon
Richards Park is located on the north end of Ottawa Street in Muskegon, just west of the interchange of the north end of Business 31 through Muskegon and the south end of the Veteran's Memorial Causeway (once known as Michigan's Most Beautiful Mile) over the Muskegon River.

Clues...

Find the Michigan Historical Marker located at this little-known park. This placard, commemorating the Muskegon Log Booming Company, provides an explanation of the stamps you'll find in this series.

From the historical marker, walk north along the paved road through the park, keeping the pond on your left. As the road curves you'll see the Middle Branch of the Muskegon River in front of you. Take a moment to imagine what the scene would have been some 150 years ago, as Muskegon was making a name for itself as the "Lumber Queen of the West". At one time, this waterway would have been jammed with logs, and the busy sounds of the mills would have provided a constant background drone.

With these pictures and sounds in mind, go over the bridge and follow the road as it curves to the south. Pass the abandoned brick buildings on the right and continue over another little bridge, where you'll gain a lovely view of Four Mile Creek on your right.

About 13 paces beyond the bridge, you'll come to a tree of many trunks. Your first mark of the Lumbertown Series is nestled on the south side of this impressive tree. Please rehide this box with care, and continue on to Lumbertown Box #2.

Time: 15 - 20 minutes
Terrain: Easy (paved)

NOTE: Pace = 2 steps (a step being the casual stride of a 5'4" person)
