It takes about 1 1/2 hours from Oklahoma City to the entrance of Roman Nose State Park. Take I-40 west to the highway 281/Geary exit. Go north on 281 through Geary. It will connect with 270 north. You continue through Watonga and approximately 5 miles farther North. Follow the road signs and turn left to the entrance of the Park.

This box will take aprox. 30 minutes of hiking round trip to find.

Once inside the park follow the signs to the Lodge. Across the parking lot from the lodge you'll see the "Roman Nose Lodge trail head", right next to the tennis courts.

Proceed down the stairs and follow the arrows. (Stop and read the trail and animal info. as you go.) Continue across the wooden footbridge and up some more stairs.

As you follow the trail you will come to a split in the trail. Make a right turn where the now familiar arrows give you a choice. Follow this main trail up to the top of the canyon. Here you will again have a choice. Go right (SW) to the entry of the "MultiUse Trail." Follow this trail up through the clearing, staying left & cross the small ravine (careful to your left), continue over the gypsum outcroppings to the information sign.

Once again you have a choice in the road. Will you take the "Canyon spur trail" or the trail to "Inspiration point." Our hunt leads you to neither. As you face this sign look to your left. You will see the lone dead cedar among the other growing trees (it seems the "Canyon spur" arrow is pointing straight to your destination.)

Leave the trail at this point and go directly toward the dead cedar. Watch out for prickly pears. When you reach the dead tree walk around it to the far (NW) side. At the base of this once tall tree you will find some more of those gypsum rocks, although now they're out of place. Look underneath and you will have found your treasure.

(As you replace the rocks be careful to put the lighter ones over the box to prevent the box from getting crushed.)

Continue along one of the paths for some interesting terrain or head back to your car. Be sure and look for the Otoe-Missouria & Lenni Lenape boxes from the Oklahoma Indian Nations Series while you're in the park. Or simply enjoy some paddleboats, fishing or even miniature golf by the general store.
