(7/2008: Sorry we're no longer to check or maintain our boxes. Check the latest status on LBNA prior to hunting it.)

8/13/2004 Update: the final instruction has been modified due to a storm.

Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. To celebrate what would have been his 120th birthday, we have created the "Harry Truman" letterbox series. These four boxes celebrate various parts of President Truman's life.

This is the second box in the Harry Truman Series.

This little spring has a long history going back to the pre-pioneer days when Sac, Kansa and Fox indians used the area as a campground. Harry Truman’s maternal grandfather (Solomon Young) owned the land from 1874 - 1877.

Harry Truman himself used to ride through the area on horseback, and picnic beside the spring with friends around 1905.

Directions from I-70:

- Exit I-70 at I-435 S (on Missouri side)

- Go S on 435

- Exit on Gregory Blvd, turn left (East)

Directions from I-35:

- Exit I-35 at I-435 E

- Follow I-435 all the way around as it turns into I-435 N

- exit on Gregory Blvd, go right (East)

From Gregory:

- Go East on Gregory 1 mile

- Right before you get to Blue Ridge Blvd, you'll see a sign on your right for "Cave Spring Interpretive Center". Turn into the parking lot.

Directions to letterbox:

- Walk to the left of the interpretive center and go on the paved trail that goes beside the woods behind the building. There will be a sign that says this is the "Joe Ammatelli Memorial Trail".

- Stay on the paved trail until you reach a wooden signpost. The paved trail goes to the left (may be closed for construction) and there are two mulched paths on your right. Choose the mulched path on the left (which is the Chickadee Trail).

- Walk on the mulched path. Just around the corner is Cave Spring. It's not what it once was, according to the park's literature.

- After checking out the spring, continue down the mulched path.

- When you have walked about 70 paces, you will see short wooden retaining walls supporting the left of the path. Step over these walls, and go on the mulched path to your left.

- Cross the wooden footbridge, and climb the steps.

- At the top of the steps, turn left and begin walking down the path.

- When you have walked 22 paces, you will see stairs on your right. Walk down those stairs.

- You will encounter a fork immediately. Go left.

- At the creek, follow the path to the right. You will see a large wooden bridge to your left. Cross this bridge and head uphill on the trail.

(6/11/2004: A recent storm downed a tree that affects the rest of these directions. The tree pretty much covers the fork in the trail, the mound of earth, and the rock retaining wall that are mentioned below. But the box is still hidden safe and sound where it was placed.)

- After you have walked up the trial 60 paces, there will be another fork in the trail. Turn left and face downhill.

- Seven paces in front of you, there is a raised mound of earth supported by a rock retaining wall. There is a dead tree on this mound.

- The box is hidden in front and to the right of the dead tree in a small hole under a medium-sized rock. The rock may be partially covered by vines and debris.

PLEASE REPLACE THE BOX IN THE HOLE, AND COVER WELL WITH THE ROCK AND DEBRIS.
