At the Bakersfield entrance to the Kern Canyon you will see a sign indicating the number of deaths that have occurred in the river since 1968. Of that number there have been only 4 that were due to rafting accidents. The vast number of others were due to being drunk while trying to swim, no life vests, wading in areas where you should not, or merely a lack of being aware of where you are while playing in the river. We have boated this river since 1978 and always wear the most expensive PFD (life jacket) one can buy.
Head to Ewings on the Kern restaurant at 125 Buena Vista Dr and park in the lot. Walk towards the sign and head towards the small path at the base of the sign. CAUTION THIS IS VERY CLOSE TO A STEEP DROP OFF! Find the first juniper on the right side of the path. Box is on the left side of the boulder at the base of the juniper.
