As the story goes, the name of the city: Wauchula...is said to be the Miccosukee Indian term for "Cry of the Sandhill Crane". Often, the City displays banners featuring the sandhill crane, and in Heritage Park there are life-size sculptures of sandhill cranes. In the heart of the city, you will find this letterbox. Begin in the center of town, at the intersection of southbound Hwy. 17 and Main Street. Head east on Main Street for 6 blocks. Turn north on to 1st Avenue, and continue north for one and a half blocks. On the east side of the street, nestled in a hedge near the street, you will find a bird house. (A little, harmless black snake took up residence in the box, so I added snake repellant and he is gone. Sometimes you might encounter a harmless lizard).
