Delavan Founders

To start your journey, park in the lot next to the building where Delavan’s first “talkie” was shown in 1929. Take a moment to read about “The Greatest Show on Earth” above Romeo and Juliet.

Look south to a building with two columns flanking the front entrance. What year was the original building dedicated? (#1) ___ ___ ___ ___. This will be the new home of the Delavan Historical Society!

Staying on the north side of the street, walk in a westerly direction, crossing the first north-south running road. Look south. Count the number of second story windows on the cream-colored brick building. (#2) ___. This building was one the home of the Knights of Pythias.

Continue walking west until you see come to the lovely, former Latimer Bank, built four years before the street was paved with vitrified bricks. Ebenezer Latimer was born in 1818 in New York, and married Elizabeth Irish Weed in Delavan in 1849. The family was prominent and well-respected in Delavan in the early part of the 20th century. Count the domed windows on the west side of this building (#3) ____.

Keep walking west crossing the next two north-south running roads. You are now entering the oldest part of town, with buildings dating back to the 1840s. Find the tallest structure on this block; what year was it built? (#4) ___ ___ ___ ___ . Looking north, you’ll see the former Park Hotel, and later the home of the I.O.O.F, with beginnings in the southwest corner of what is now known as the State of Wisconsin in 1835.

Go back to the street you just crossed and head north. Quickly look for Francisco Vargas on your right, an award-winning artist, muralist, and celebrated member of the Walldogs. Turn into this alternate route, passing the names of prominent artists when Delavan was a popular artists colony in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
From here, head north out of this lot until you reach the road with a good Irish name; cross this street and head east. You’ll pass a home with a circle drive on your left, behind which was an elite mineral spa in the late 1800s.

Just past the former spa, enter the gate and look north for an enclosure. Here you will find the names of those who arrived in this area in 1836 to form a Temperance Colony.
Subtract #1 from #4= ________. From that, subtract #2= _______. From that, subtract #3=______. This is your compass setting.

Standing at the northeast corner of the enclosure, walk 7 paces (14 steps) at your compass setting answer. You should see a place where the Founders box can comfortably hide.

RETURN TRIP: To return to your starting point, exit from the southeast gate. Head south until you reach the “Red Devils”, then turn east. When you are prompted to “Fasten Your Seat Belt, turn right, then left at the first stop sign.
