Terrain Difficulty: Difficult (moderate slope, 17 km RT)
The intelligent, inquisitive, and highly endangered kea parrot is one of nine living endemic parrot species in New Zealand and are the only alpine parrots in the world. It has also been called “clown of the mountains” for its mischievous and playful antics, including flying off with unguarded clothing and other items from campsites and carparks. But don't let that stop you from finding this box on the Kepler Track, which features stunning landscapes of beech forests, alpine ridges and keas.
Directions:
Take a water transfer from Te Anau to Brod Bay to avoid several extra km of walking from the Kepler Carpark.
Clues:
Walk west on the Kepler Track to Luxmore Hut, but just before it, go left on the trail to Luxmore Cave. At the steps going down to cave entrance, go left and up on a faint trail about 50 meters to a small rocky bluff. LB is next to a medium rock under a flat, reddish rock. When you eat your packed lunch at the Luxmore Hut, beware the food-stealing keas.
