Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, 2km RT)
Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer who became the first person, along with Tenzing Norgay, to climb Mt Everest on May 29, 1953. Although born in Auckland, he honed his skills on Mt Cook before his Everest ascent and is honored by the Hillary Alpine Center in the Hermitage Hotel in Mt Cook Village. I am also honoring him by this letterbox, which can be found on the nearby Hooker Valley Track.
Directions:
From Mt Cook Rd go north on Hooker Valley Rd to parking lot at end.
Clues:
Pay fee at kiosk and walk past restrooms onto Hooker Valley Track to first bridge over Hooker River. Go left on an unmaintained trail as it winds right and up to a bluff. LB is under the right side of the highest rock under a small rock next to a small bush.
