Terrain Difficulty: Moderate (moderate slope, 4 km RT)
In the Lord of the Rings book, Orthanc was the black, impenetrable tower of Isengard built by the early men of Gondor. By the time of the War of the Ring, it was the seat of power of the traitorous Wizard Sauruman, who briefly held Gandalf captive there. You can see the place where they filmed background for the movie at Isengard Lookout by the Dart River after finding this box at Glenorchy Walkway.
Directions:
From Glenorchy-Queenstown Rd, go west on Mull St to carpark on the right at Lake Wakatipu.
Clues:
Walk north on the Walkway trail along the Rees River a short way to an asphalt road. Go left a short way then continue left on the Walkway trail to a jct for a loop. Stay right, going counter-clockwise on the loop, as it goes by a golf course and RV park on the right with three large trees on the left before going on a boardwalk. LB is on back right side of the third tree under a root and rocks. Please be discreet since this is a popular trail and continue on the boardwalk for great views of Mt Earnslaw.
