Last checked/found: 21-FEB-26
Location: kraP etatS anilataC
Terrain: Sandy and rocky trail, with mostly gradual ascent & descent
Distance: 3.2 miles roundtrip, elevation gain ~380 ft
NOTES: Trekking pole(s) and hat are recommended. Please take plenty of water along. Do your homework before heading out as there are many other boxes hidden on this route, which is part of a loop. If you will be in the area to do a lot of boxing, contact me to get .pdf versions of clue booklets for two events that were held in the park. They will make it more efficient to find boxes on various loops in the park. There are at least 19 boxes on this loop.
Asia is the largest continent and has some amazing sights within the 48+ countries that are located there. If you check AQ and LBNA for more clues, you’ll have a chance to visit several countries on this loop hike.
Park at the lot just across from the Romero Ruins Trailhead sign. This is the second lot on your left after you enter the park.
From the Romero Ruins parking lot, cross the street and head towards Romero Ruins by crossing the large wash. At the intersection pointing left to Romero Ruins, you need to go right onto the Alamo Canyon Trail.
Martini Man & I had a fantastic trip to Vietnam and Cambodia in FEB 2025. It was our first visit to the continent of Asia and it was very interesting to see a different lifestyle and so many impressive sights.
Once on the Alamo Canyon trail, walk approximately 1.2 miles (passing 10 other boxes). You should then pass through two bumpy boulders about 2-3 feet high, one on each edge of the trail, with another shorter “pyramid” rock between them in the center of the trail. Take 35 more steps on the trail to see a sandy area on the right. Take a bearing of 10° to spot a rock pile between two shrubs about 25 steps in. Here you will meet the man that led the long campaign to make Vietnam independent. He was president of North Vietnam from 1945 to 1969. HO CHI MINH is buried in the rock pile near a small triangular white quartz memorial stone. (We actually saw his preserved body in his Mausoleum in Hanoi.)
Continue on the main trail through an area that has some informal trail intersections. Next you’ll see many saguaros on a hillside on your left. Then you’ll pass by a 4’ x 3’ gray “rock island” in the center of the trail. Continue on as the trail curves right, then left and continue a bit further until you reach a large boulder on the left. From behind the boulder take a bearing of 65° to a small boulder. From that boulder, take a bearing of 100° for 24 steps to arrive at a large boulder to the left of a bush. The VIETNAMESE ÁO DÀI is being modeled behind the boulder. It is a national garment consisting of a long split tunic worn over silk trousers.
Return to the main trail and continue until you reach a huge saguaro at the edge of a canyon. The trail turns left at this point. When you reach a brown trail sign, walk in 10 steps on the side trail to the left. Stay left at the fork and continue 15 more steps. CAMBODIA - ANGKOR WAT is in the hillside grouping on the right. Look in front of the bumpy rock, on the right side. It is the world’s largest religious monument, originally built in the early 12th century as a Hindu temple, but later transitioned into a Buddhist site.
Retrace your steps to return to the parking lot, or better yet, continue on the loop to find some of the many other boxes on this loop.
We’d appreciate a note to let us know how the boxes are doing.
