Boxes last checked/found: 21-FEB-2026

Location: kraP etatS anilataC
Terrain: Sandy and rocky trail, with mostly gradual ascent & descent
Distance: ~3.5 miles total in & out, elevation gain ~340 ft
NOTES: Trekking pole(s) and hat are recommended. Please take plenty of water along. Do your homework before heading out as there are many other boxes hidden on this route, which is part of a loop. If you will be in the area to do a lot of boxing, contact me to get .pdf versions of clue booklets for two events that were held in the park. They will make it more efficient to find boxes on various loops in the park.

Head to the equestrian center and park on the left along the fence in the designated area for vehicles without trailers. Restrooms are available at this location.

To begin, go to the trailhead on the north side of the parking lot. It is the start of three trails. Start on the trail and at the first intersection take a left hairpin turn onto the 50-Year Trail. Up you go! At the next intersection, take a right to stay on the 50-Year Trail.

At the tip of South America is the town of Ushuaia, nicknamed the “End of the World.” It is the starting point for most voyages to Antarctica. In DEC 2023, Martini Man & I embarked on an expedition with Overseas Adventure Travels, crossing the infamous Drake Passage twice (once relatively smoothly but coming back, fairly rough). We walked on the southernmost continent and visited several nearby islands. We took zodiac outings from the ship twice a day and enjoyed seeing three types of penguins, many whales, a few seals and numerous birds.

Continue on the 50-Year Trail about 1.5 miles until you reach a notched (smiling?) 5-armed saguaro on the left. From here, turn around to retrace your path to the parking lot. On your way back, you’ll be able to find 4 boxes. You’ll pass a side trail on the left and then a small open area with rocks on the left. Continue between a Palo Verde w/ 3 saguaros on the right edge of the trail and a prickly pear on the left edge. From here, take 25 steps further on the trail to another Palo Verde and prickly pear combo. Then take 25 more steps further on the trail to another Palo Verde and prickly pear. Finally, take another 3 steps and then head in at 300° to the right for 18 steps, then at 10° for 18 steps to a light colored rock near a prickly pear. The ADÉLIE PENGUIN is tending her nest in the SPOR.

Return to the main trail and continue onward. Pass an impressive saguaro w/13+ arms on the left and then continue past a Palo Verde-Saguaro grouping on the right. Pass another similar grouping and then stop at the third grouping. Take a bearing of 160° and walk in 24 steps. The fun-loving CHINSTRAP PENGUIN is playing beneath the bumpy rock 4 steps to the right.

Continue on the trail for quite a while until you reach a water tank on the left. Just after passing the tank and a few Palo Verde trees, head in on the left. Follow along a rock wall until you reach a metal trough. The GENTOO PENGUIN is calling out to his friends from the rock wall to the left of the trough, under a small white rock.

Continue on the main trail, heading down and curving to the left. Eventually pass several large white-colored boulders on the left. Then keep a sharp eye out for a flat metal plate near ground level on the right. Go back on the trail 7 steps. Then go in to the southeast for 17 steps to a boulder. The crew in the zodiac is WHALE WATCHING from behind the boulder.

Continue on the trail to the next intersection, then take a left to head down the hill. Take a right at the bottom, then stay straight to return to the parking lot.

We’d appreciate a note to let us know how the boxes are doing.
