Terrain: Sandy and rocky trail, with mostly gradual ascent & descent
Distance: ~1.5 miles, elevation gain ~85 ft
NOTES: Trekking pole(s) and hat are recommended. Please take plenty of water.
Park in lot near the Trailhead parking lot at the end of the park road. Once parked, cross the street to the kiosk. Head straight in from this point and start out towards the Birding Trail. Your route will require you to cross the main wash in the park. After the crossing, head right on the Birding Trail.
In MAY 2024, Martini Man & I traveled to southern Africa to experience safaris in four countries (Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe). Several of the bush camps had art work that portrayed African animals. The stamp images in this series are based on wall hangings we saw in Botswana and South Africa. The safari experience was amazing and we saw a huge variety of animals and birds.
Enter the Birding Loop and continue until you reach a bench on the left, just before a “Y”. A MONKEY has climbed up the tree behind the bench and is hiding in a hole 3 ft up on the NE side. Please check for trail traffic before retrieving and rehiding.
Continue to the “Y”, turn right and continue to a bench on the left. Take a bearing of 310° to see a standing dead tree 24 step away. The GUINEA FOWL is nesting at the back of the tree.
Continue on the trail until you reach a bench that reminds you “Every day is a gift, enjoy the present”. Take a moment to enjoy the mountain views. Then go to the back of the sprawling tree behind the bench. An ELEPHANT is trying to consume this tree from inside a branch 3-4 ft from the ground and near a cholla.
Continue on the trail to the next bench on the right at the edge of a wash. Go back 16 steps on the trail and then take a bearing of 340°. Go in this direction for 25 steps to a mesquite. Go around the tree to see dead standing branches 10-15 step away. The GIRAFFE that munched on the tree is hiding at the base, covered by other branches.
Return to the bench and continue on the trail, crossing the wash and climbing up the stairs to reach new heights. Stop at the bench on the right. There is a faint trail on the left side of the bench that leads to a large saguaro at 150°. Take ~20 steps along the path until you reach an orange rock. This is where a WARTHOG hangs out.
Continue on the trail and stop at the next bench where the trail makes a left turn. Take a side trail behind the bench for 24 steps in a SE direction. Look left to see a stump 7 steps in that is home for a ZEBRA.
Return to the bench and continue on the trail, down the steps and cross the wash. When the trail curves follow it to the left, then take a right near the first bench on the loop and continue until you exit the Birding Loop. Take a left at the intersection, cross the big wash and continue forward to return to the parking lot.
