The Quest for Ensign Tom’s Legacy
This year, 2026, we celebrate 250 years of American Independence and honor those who gave much to secure our freedom. We introduce you to Ensign Tom, one of our WWII heroes.
We begin our journey at St. Theresa’s Oak Knoll Cemetery in Eagle, located on Hwy 67, 0.8 miles north of the entrance to Old World Wisconsin. It’s on the right hand (east) side of the road. Enter the south gate and park inside.
Clue 1: The Cemetery
This cemetery is the final resting place for many of Eagle’s early pioneers including twelve Civil War Veterans as well as many WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Veterans.
Ensign Tom’s grave is on the left (north) side, second row.
"Among the stones where heroes rest, Seek the marker that tells it best. Block C3, Section 23, Grave 3— Find Tom’s Last Name."
👉 Once you’ve found Tom’s stone, whisper a thank-you, and write down his last name. Your next clue lies in the village nearby.
Clue 2: Eagle Village & Red Roof Station
Head north from the cemetery on Hwy 67, about 1/2 mile, and park in the large parking lot on the right-hand side by the railroad tracks. It’s across the street from Red Roof Station.
The Red Roof Station building traces its roots to the early 1850s, when William Kline constructed what became one of Eagle’s first and most distinguished landmarks, the Kline Hotel. In 1851, Kline donated land across the street for the Milwaukee & Mississippi Railroad depot, helping Eagle become a hub for trade and travel.
Behind Red Roof Station you can see the steeple and clock tower on St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Though traveling Catholic priests conducted services in Eagle since the early 1840’s, the current church structure was built on its current site in 1895.
"A roof of red, a station old, where trains once stopped and goods were sold. Look behind, at steeple tall, Count the clock faces—one and all."
👉 The number of clock faces on St. Theresa’s tower will guide you onward.
🪵 Clue 3: The Fire Station
The Eagle Fire department has served the Town and Village of Eagle since 1927 and was originally located in a small building just east of its current location. They expanded and built the current structure in 1996.
Locate the Fire Department flag and find a memorial plaque nearby.
"So here we stand, with heads held high, Beneath Eagle’s endless sky. Lt. Ellenson, forever near, we guard his memory year by year."
👉 Note the year on the memorial plaque—it’s your key to the next step.
Clue 4: Main Street & the Old Hospital
Return to your car and head south on State Hwy 67 for a half block and turn left (east) on to Main Street. (Be careful to yield to oncoming traffic). Drive to the Eagle Historical Society museum located at 217 E. Main St., on the right side.
Across the street from the large eagle in front of the Eagle Historical Society is the old Eagle Hospital (1895–1953). Dr. Fitzgerald was the first doctor there and Tom’s father was a physician there until his death in 1946. Though now a private residence, its walls once echoed with care, surgery, and recovery.
"A healing home from days gone by, where doctors worked and patients lie. Fitzgerald rode by horse and cart, Schmidt joined in with healing heart. Now a house, but once a hall, find its story—remember all."
👉 How many windowpanes are facing you
on the 2nd floor?
Clue 5: Veteran’s Memorial and Walkway
Turn around and walk through the entrance to the Veteran’s Memorial and Walkway, which honors our U.S. Armed Forces—past, present, and future. It is dedicated to veterans of all wars and conflicts. We thank you for your service!
" Before you stands a tribute wall, to those who rose at freedom’s call.
Tom’s black star marks the life he gave, but there’s another hero brave.”
👉 Find the other soldier’s last name.
The Prize!
