Merry Christmas from The Domedreamers! ’Tis the season for our Christmas Card letterbox! Continuing our tradition, we have hidden a letterbox with the stamp we used to make our Christmas cards this year. The box will be available starting on Christmas Eve, and will be in place until Epiphany. (please do not contact us in July and tell us that it is missing).
We loved the location from last year’s boxes, so we’ve gone back this year. The box is at the Porter Reservoir on Ferguson Street in Manchester. The hike is probably less than half a mile, but it’s a beautiful location (especially if you go when there’s been some snow), so you may want to continue with a longer walk after you find the box. If you look online you can find a map of the trails, and there is supposed to be a 2.6 mile loop, with additional trails. Except for a couple of short uphills it’s a very easy walk.
Okay, now for the clues!
Park in the Porter Reservoir Access area on Ferguson Road–if you come from Porter St. it will be on the right shortly after you turn onto Ferguson. Walk past the gate onto the trail, and follow the white trail up a little hill. At the first Y intersection keep to the left. When you come to a double-blazed tree go right and head downhill to an impressive rock (surrounded by lots of other rocks) near the edge of a stream. There will be a tree in front of you with red trail blazes. Turn left on this trail–we were a bit confused by the blazes, but you will pass a blue-blazed tree shortly after this, and enter an enchanting pine grove. Continue on, crossing a stream, until you come to an area where the trail opens up. Go straight at this intersection, and you will follow a path below a hill. At the top of this rise, head counter-clockwise around the pond. You’ll pass over a culvert where a stream empties into the reservoir. When you come to a sort of cove in the pond, after passing a low wall of cut stone where yet another stream joins the pond, look for a path on the right. There is a sign on the back of a tree right at the start of the trail. You’ll pass an area with a lot of boulders on the right, including a pair that look like parent and child rocks with wide mouths. Pass another trail entering on the left, and take a right at the next Y intersection. When you come to a tree with a triple white blaze, continue straight up the left-hand trail. Keep going straight up the hill. You will pass a small boulder very close to the right side of the trail, and shortly after will see a much larger boulder off the trail the right. Go around the right side of this boulder and look into the woods at 2:00. You will see a tree stump that looks like a short Barad-dûr at the end of a fallen tree, but don’t worry, Sauron is not here–this is a Christmas letterbox, joyous vibes only! (For those who have not seen The Lord of the Rings, the stump has two spiky peaks). The letterbox is inside the stump.
A bit about the stamp: It was inspired by a workshop I took online about illuminated letters, and on our Christmas cards I added a little bit of embellishment to get a little bit of that look. If you want the true look of our Christmas card you can add accents with gold pen and a little bit of red, as seen on the image on the logbook, or add your own embellishments.
After you’ve stamped in there are more trails to explore. I don’t know the trails well, and I don’t know where you will end up if you continue on this trail. You can head back to the pond, and either return the way you came, or continue around the pond, which is a beautiful walk. This will take you to a pretty, little bridge, and if you go over it you will end up back to the path that brought you there, or you can pass by the bridge and continue down that paved trail, and turning left at the next intersection, just past the sign, will also send you back the way you came. Or, use your trail map and spend time exploring!
If you go on Christmas Day you may run into the Domedreamers.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD HIKE!!!!
