The first time my son came to this park, he was young and we had just entered. His father had almost hit a bear and my son's eyes almost popped out of his head, he was so surprised. He had never seen a bear before!
I will never forget his expression, so I decided to plant a box to remember his first bear sighting.
After entering Catoctin Mountain Park, park in the Thurmont Vista Lot and take the Charcoal Trail. This is a loop trail that is a half mile around. It doesn't matter what direction you start at. Walk until you locate the mountain sled display. Facing the display, stand and the left post with the chain attatched to it. Locate at about 10/11 o'clock a tree. A 3 ft tree stump should be directly in line within the sight of it. The tree you are looking for will have a flat stone, on it's side, against the tree. The pouch is wedged between the flat stone and tree trunk, on the right side.
*At this time, the Visitor's Center is closed due to the government shut down.
*Also if you do decide to park at the Visitor's center, the parking is limited.
This is a lovely park with many hiking trails and some vistas to view scenery.
