Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 1.5 mi RT)
The Great Springs Project, founded by Deborah Morin, aims to create a hike and bike trail from the Alamo to the Texas State Capitol by connecting four great springs: San Antonio, Comal, San Marcos, and Barton Springs. Aside from the recreational value, the non-profit's objective is to preserve and protect 50,000 acres over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, between San Antonio and Austin. I first heard about this project several years ago when my daughter was working with Deborah Morin during the early days of this project and have been anxiously awaiting sections of the trail to be built. I was therefore excited to read that a 1.3 mile trail was recently opened in the Limestone Link Greenbelt that connects Ringtail Ridge and River Recharge Natural Areas and I decided to place this letterbox in honor of the occasion. The Great Springs Trail is expected to be completed by the Texas Bicentennial in 2036, and this trail is a good start.
Directions:
One end of the Limestone Link Trail is at 1807 Old Ranch Road 12, but there is no parking at the trailhead and if coming from Ringtail Ridge you would have to cross this busy road. I decided to start at the River Recharge Natural Area at north end of Bishop Street where it meets Lisa Ln. Park near the gate.
Clues:
Walk around gate to kiosk on right and walk through it onto the Swallet Loop. A little after crossing a dry creek, come to jct with Doline Trail. Go straight on it past jct with Stone Spur Trail and jct with Service Lane to jct with Karst Corner Loop. Go right on it, staying straight at jct with Service Lane, to jct with Limestone Link. Go right on it through green poles to bench and map sign on left. Walk behind sign 12 steps to long rock next to barbed-wire fence. LB is behind left side of it under smaller rocks & leaves.
