Terrain Difficulty: Easy (steep slope, 400 yards RT)

From 1918 until about 1927, the Post Office Department operated the nation’s airmail service and they needed a way for pilots to get from point A to point B safely and reliably, so they installed a system of 50-foot lighted beacon towers across the country. In 1927, the Department of Commerce took over responsibility for the airways, and it was around then that they installed the 70-foot-long concrete directional arrows at the beacons. The beacon towers were each assigned a number and the arrows would point to the beacon with the next highest number. That way, whichever direction you were flying, you would know which way to go to find the next beacon on your path. The last arrow was constructed in 1931, and as new navigation technology advanced, the arrows and beacons were essentially obsolete. Many still exist and thanks to research by Brian and Charlotte Smith, who keep a database of over 100 arrow locations called Arrows Across America, you can go see them, including the Montague Arrow where this box resides.

Directions:
From I5, drive east on Montague Rd (CA-3) for about 5 miles to Montague Airport, then left on Airport Way for 0.3 mile, just past cemetery on left, and park on right side of road.

Clues:
Walk east through downed fence and go on old dirt road as it goes to left side of the big hill. Go right and up on a faint path to the top and find the arrow. The arrow points the way to the box 20 steps away behind a small bush among rocks under SPOR.
