The Owl Encounter

We were finally Camping. Our whole family was there. Warm night, gentle breeze, clear skies!
Our bellies were full of the fish we had caught that day.
We sat around the campfire and let the soft crackling sound lull us.
Sparks flowated upward. Night sounds drifted from the woods nearby.
"Hoo, hoo, hoooo." Was that an owl? I wonder where he was perching?
I decided to follow the sounds and set off by myself in the direction of the registration station. Then I stopped to wait for its next call.

"Hoooooo-o-o-o-o" more warbly this time. I headed west and stopped for a minute to swing, pumping my feet trying to reach the stars. I heard it again.

Was it coming from that lion up ahead? I stopped to try out the fountain and listened again. "Hooo, hooo, hooooo." No...it must be somewhere in the woods to the south. I walked that way quietly hoping the owl didn't fly away before I found the tree it was in.

I got to the edge of the gravel and stopped, then turned to follow the sound along the tree line west toward the lake. Up ahead was a tall pine tree near the road. Was it there? Before I got that far I heard it again, in the woods across from the last deciduous tree in the mowed area of the park.

"Hoo, hoo, hooo." I thought it would be high in a tree, but there it was, a couple steps into the woods sitting on a stump looking at me. I stood there silent. It looked at me for a minute, then lifted into the air and flew away. I watched it disappear and then turned to look where it had sat. The owl left a gift for me. A memory of our silent moment.
