Washington Johnson opened TJ’s Catfish and Wings in 2002. After his passing, his son Travis took over and grew the restaurant into what it is today: AMAZING!! In 2021, Travis’s nephew, MJ, added his tasty BBQ menu. Literally everything on the menu is Southern soul food heaven. My husband and Travis played basketball together in high school. The kids beg to go see “Mr. Travis” weekly. They order the same every time: catfish and boneless wings, and they love sitting in the stadium seating section. Mom and Dad enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere. Travis is good man who loves and helps his community on top of providing delicious food and a fun hangout.
The clue:
Check the hours of operation and make sure you come hungry. After you order (I recommend the brisket tacos or the Texas Spud, but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.) while you wait for your food, you will go fill up your drink at the drink station around the corner. Once your drink is filled, slide all the way down to the far left end of the metal table top to pick up your straw and cutlery. While there, reach your hand up under the counter top. Way in the corner closest to you, you will find the flying catfish in a black magnetic box. Pull hard! It’s a strong magnet. Sneak it to your table to do your stamping, and replace when the coast is clear under the guise of refilling your drink, or grabbing a to-go box. If “Mr. Travis” is there, tell him we said “hi”!
