From the parking lot, head to the kiosk and follow the trail to the left of the kiosk; continue straight, past the picnic table.
At the fork, stay to the right and follow the Brookside trail (look for blue blazes on trees)
Fun fact! You will find yourself in a young forest of eastern hemlock trees. It is the tree with the longest lifespan in the eastern forest and is important habitat. It provides shelter and food for deer, moose, chipmunks, voles, porcupines, and more. It is also a popular nesting site for the black-throated green warbler and the blue-headed vireo.
Cross the brook (watch your step or you’ll have wet feet!) & continue on the blue trail
You will climb up and over the hill. As you begin going down the hill, keep an eye out on the left side of the trail for the remains of a unique tree - it is broken off at about 5 feet tall and the base is hollow, forming an archway (If you reach the stream, you have gone too far!)
If you look through the archway, you will see a dead cedar (we call dead trees “snags”). The letterbox is hidden in the base of the cedar.
Carefully remove it, add the stamp from the letterbox to your logbook and re-hide the box, so that it isn’t visible unless you know where to look.
You can now choose to turn around and head back to the parking lot or continue ahead to Foskett Mill Stream and the waterfall. If you choose to continue on to the waterfall, you can return to the parking lot following the yellow trail (up the hill above the waterfall).
