Headwaters Conservation Area is a big, beautiful forest where Bread and Cheese Brook begins. This cold-water stream flows into the East Branch of the Westport River. The forest has many cool hiking trails that go through tall hardwood trees, by the stream, and even through areas with young plants and tall white pine trees.
The trails can be a bit bumpy and have some hills, so make sure to wear good shoes and be ready for an adventure! You can also see lots of birds here, so bring binoculars if you have them.

This special place was protected thanks to The Trustees, the Westport Community Preservation Fund, Massachusetts Waterfowlers, Inc., and some kind donors. In 2015, Preston Duclos and Boy Scout Troop 100 from North Westport helped create the trails.
Now for your clues…

After arriving at the trailhead head up the path on the red trail. When following the red trail you will get to your first fork in the trail where you can go left and to the blue trail, or right continuing on red…stay on red! You will arrive at a majestic opening in the trail that is picture worthy. Stop and look up at the towering pines, they are just AWESOME! When arriving at this area you will be at yet another fork and have an option to now go onto a yellow trail…do just that! The yellow trail will take you down and around to our letterbox. Be on the lookout for two huge rocks on your left. Explore this area. Down tucked neatly under the larger boulder is your letterbox! Don't forget to replace the box exactly where you found it and leave everything in the box that you find there.

If you are feeling energized feel free to continue down and loop around on the yellow trail and see if you can spot our WES Wildcat Walks sign! It's always fun to run into those.

Here at Westport Elementary School, we participate in Massachusetts Farm to School’s Harvest of the Month! This month’s highlight is seafood! Inside the letterbox, you’ll find just that!

Seafood can be super healthy and tasty! It’s packed with things like protein, which helps your body grow strong, and omega-3s, which are great for your brain and heart. Eating fish like salmon or tuna can even help you concentrate better in school! Plus, seafood has vitamins and minerals that keep your bones and muscles strong. So, next time you see seafood on your plate, give it a try—it’s like fuel for your amazing body!
Did you know that in New England, clams are a seafood favorite, especially in dishes like clam chowder! Did you know that clams can live to be over 100 years old? The oldest clam ever found was nicknamed "Ming" because it was 507 years old—older than the United States!
