There are two stories about why Santa Margarita Cemetery is located where it is. What is not disputed is that before 1889 (when the town of Santa Margarita began), Patrick Murphy allowed (or didn’t stop) town people from burying people on Ranch property. After Frank Reis bought the Santa Margarita Ranch in 1904, he realized that this practice could not continue and gave the land where the present-day cemetery is located. However, some gravesites pre-date the cemetery’s inception.
Regardless of which story is true, Santa Margarita Cemetery is a special place.
Cemeteries are places where we visit to remember our loved ones and sometimes strangers to appreciate the lives they led.
The Santa Margarita Cemetery is the final resting place of a dearly missed soul, and they find special heart-shaped rocks and leave them here with him.
This inspired our most recent letterbox.

Head to the Santa Margarita Cemetery.
As you drive in, turn to the left. Then turn right. Stop at the first pine tree on your left.
Walk over to the pine tree and you will find a grave with a duck on a slab rock for Jacob C. Avarado. Spend a moment here. Find all the heart-shaped rocks lovingly placed here.
We found a heart-shaped rock and left it here in remembrance. Find and leave your own heart shaped rock here in memory of Jacob.

Walk over to the gazebo.
Go to the ramp.
Look under the ramp on the left-hand side of the walkway to find the letterbox.
As always, use caution and do not let others see.
Carefully replace when finished.
Check out the other unique memories at this one-of-a-kind cemetery.
