Westport Town Farm is a special place near a river where you can go for a walk and enjoy nature. A long time ago, during colonial times, it was a working farm. You can still see old stone walls, a big red barn, a little building for storing corn, and a very old farmhouse.
For over 100 years, this farm helped take care of people in the town who didn’t have much money or a place to live. Now, it’s open for everyone to visit!
There’s an easy one-mile trail that goes through woods, grassy fields, and past a big hay meadow near the river. Because it’s so pretty and peaceful, lots of people come here to walk their dogs, take pictures, or paint.
In 2006, a group called The Trustees worked with the town and neighbors to save the farm and make sure everyone could enjoy it. They got help from local people who gave money to fix it up. Now, The Trustees take care of the farm. The farmhouse is used as an office and a home for someone who lives there.
To find this letterbox park in the lot and make your way across the quahog shells and the street towards the opening in the stone wall on the property.Take a right following a path that will lead you left at another stone wall. Head towards the water! You will reach a sign that can send you off on various meadow-trails…stay to your far right of the three paths. The view should already start to be pretty majestic- Westport is beautiful!
Feel free to stop at the look-out bench and take a photo! Make your way down the path to the opening of yet another stone wall. If you take a left you will see a lone Eastern Redcedar tree perched just behind the wall. YOU ARE CLOSE! There is a big rock just below that tree that serves as a nice, little seat. Go for it. When seated look down to the right and nestled in the stone wall you will find your letterbox.
Here at Westport Elementary School, we participate in Massachusetts Farm to School’s Harvest of the Month! This month’s highlight is the potato! Inside the letterbox, you’ll find just that!
Potatoes are a type of vegetable that grow underground. They come in many shapes, sizes, and colors—like white, yellow, red, purple, and even blue! Did you know potatoes are a great source of complex carbohydrates, which give your body energy to play and learn all day?
Potatoes also have vitamin C, which helps your body heal cuts and fight off sickness, and potassium, which helps your heart, muscles, and nerves work properly. Just like with tomatoes, cooking potatoes—like baking, boiling, or roasting—can help your body absorb more of their healthy nutrients.
Wow—what a powerful little veggie!
Please remember to replace the box exactly where you found it and leave everything in the box that you find there. Happy Hunting!
