You can visit Old Harbor Wildlife Refuge at 386 Old Harbor Road in Westport, MA. It has 79 awesome acres to explore and 1.8 miles of trails! Thanks to kind neighbors who let the trails extend onto their protected lands, this refuge has a great trail network. The trails go through beautiful forests, wetlands, and uplands, making it the perfect spot for peaceful walks in nature. This special place exists because of land donations from Patience B. and Burton D. Bryan, as well as Reverend Robert Lawrence and Dr. Elizabeth Atwood Lawrence.
Now for your clues...
Upon entering the parking area proceed to the trailhead. If you sneak a quick peek to your left you may see a little lady-bug nestled in the tree. Peek at the map on the trailhead and locate the orange trail. Head towards that direction and take in what Mother Nature has to offer. Do you hear any birds? Can you smell the rich smell of the earth around you?
Continue down the path around the bend. Your first marker will be a big boulder on your left. Keep walking until you see a little wooden plank-bridge over some wetlands. At this point you are walking right into a fork in the forest. If you guessed right…you’re right! Take 23 steps down the path exploring the beautiful rock wall along the way. At about step 24 you will see a cool looking rock at the base of the wall. It kinda looks like the head of a snake! Gently pull that rock out and you will find your treasure! Please remember to “squash” it back into its place!
Here at the Westport Elementary School we participate in Massachusetts Farm to School Harvest of the Month. This months highlight is Winter squash. Winter squash is a superstar of nutrition and flavor! Packed with vitamins A and C, fiber, and antioxidants, it’s a delicious way to stay healthy during the colder months. Its naturally sweet, nutty taste makes it perfect for roasting, soups, or even desserts. Plus, it’s super versatile and keeps well, making it a pantry favorite. Whether it’s butternut, acorn, or spaghetti squash, this hearty veggie is as nourishing as it is tasty—perfect for warming up your winter meals! What is your favorite type of Winter squash?
