This box was hidden by three moms (first plant for "Vaquera Salvaje" and "Hard Workin' Mama"!) and their passel of rowdy rodeo kids, ages 5 to 11.
Accessible: June 15 - November 30. Use judgement regarding weather.
Level of Terrain: easy/moderately easy hike.
Time required after parking: Approx 20 minutes to letterbox, another 5 to get to the waterfalls (which you really should do). Round trip 1 hour, or more if you want to hang out and play in the waterfalls.
Head west from Longview on Hwy 40. You'll go past "Highwood House" (gas station), and at this point, there is a gate that is closed during the winter. You will not be able to get past it from December 1 through June 14.
From Highwood House, go about 5 km further west/north as the highway bends around. You'll notice a parking area on your right, which you could use, and then proceed uphill on foot. Or you could turn left and park in the Cat Creek day-use area (what we did), and then proceed up the trail, cross the highway, and continue.
As you hike, you'll notice placards with information about the terrain/area. You will pass the following:
1) Travel in the Highwood
2) Valley Terraces
3) The Pine Forest
4) Blowdown
5) Reclamation
If you get to Ford Camp, you've gone too far.
Facing the "Reclamation" sign, at your back (but immediately on the side of the trail) you'll notice a couple of large-ish poplars along with a some smaller scrubby spruce. There is a black pill bottle hanging by a wire at eye-level in the tree. You do not need to unwrap the wire. Just unscrew the lid of the pill bottle and leave it hanging while you do your stamping.
Enjoy!
