Begin at Longmeadow Trailhead on the Haw River Trail,
1120 Valley Drive, Graham NC, 27253.
From the trailhead covered sign, follow the trail northeast, walking the trail toward the Interstate 40 bridge over the Haw River. Follow the trail for 183 paces northeast from the trailhead sign. From this location on the trail, look northeast, to a stand of 4 large trees, 12 paces northwest of the trail. Among that group of four trees is one dead tree riddled with woodpecker holes that has some fallen bark at its base. The letterbox is at the base of this woodpeckered tree, under a large scrap of fallen bark.
If you get to a trail intersection where the crossing trail leads to the river to the Southeast and a transmission tower to the northwest, then you have gone 20 paces too far from the trailhead.
