Like my other Musical Journey Series (1960s & 1970s), this series is about the rock groups I listened to in the 1980s and still listen to now. Though some of the groups were formed in the 70s, they are included here since most of their work was done in the 80s. I have included links to songs by each group to help you get in the mood, or listen to while finding this series at River Ranch County Park.

Directions:
Go south on CR 279 for about 2 miles then right on Reveille Way to River Ranch County Park. Go past Headquarters parking to first parking area on right (Trailhead Parking East) and park.

Box 1: Motörhead was an English rock band formed in 1975 in London known for their overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal. They released a few albums in the 1970s, but their 1980 album (Ace of Spades) reached number 4 on the UK charts and contained the hit song Ace of Spades. The Live Album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith was released in 1981 and it showcased their hard-driving style with songs like Motorhead.
Walk to far end of lot to sign showing trail "A" with arrows pointing left and straight. Go left on it a short way to where trail bends left with a view of the road ahead. Go right off trail 15 steps on narrow path between a small and a large cedar tree to back of large one. LB is within trunks under sticks & needles.

Box 2: Van Halen was an American rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1973 known for their energetic live performances and for the virtuosity of its guitarist, Eddie Van Halen. They released two albums in the late 1970s that did well, but they really cemented their platinum-selling status with the 1980 album (Women and Children First) with songs like Everybody Wants Some. The album released in 1984 (called 1984) featured my favorite song of theirs called Hot For Teacher.
Continue on trail, crossing the "V" trail and road, to trail "A" sign. Stay on trail as it bends left to a green sign on right saying "Elbowbush". Go right off trail 10 steps to back side of a tall cedar tree with LB under a large rock & needles.

Box 3: The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977 and they played a style of rock influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz. They released their first album (Outlandos d'Amour) in 1978, but the next album (Reggatta de Blanc) in 1979 became the first of four consecutive No. 1 studio albums in the UK and contained the number 1 hit song Message In A Bottle. In 1983, the Police released their last studio album (Synchronicity), which spawned the hit single Every Breath You Take.
Continue on trail past a trail sign on left to where it bends left and houses are visible ahead. Go left off trail 20 steps to a small cedar tree with LB within its trunks under a rock & needles.

Box 4: The Cars were an American new wave band formed in Boston in 1976 and led by vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Ric Ocasek. They released their first album in 1978 (The Cars) that did well but their second album (Candy-O), released in 1979, was an even bigger hit peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart. It featured their first Top-20 single Let's Go. After releasing a couple less successful albums and taking a two-year break, they released their most successful album (Heartbeat City) in 1984, with several hit singles such as the title track Heartbeat City.
Continue on trail past houses on the left and trail bends left to last backyard fence. Go left off trail 12 steps to a large cedar tree with several rocks scattered around it. LB is at back base under a rock & needles.

Box 5: Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. They released their self-titled album in 1980, which featured early favorite songs like Phantom of the Opera. After releasing another album (Killers) in 1981 they replaced their lead singer with Bruce Dickinson, which was a turning point in their career and established them as one of heavy metal's most important bands. The first album with him on vocals (Number of the Beast) was released in 1982 and is among the most popular heavy metal albums of all time with songs like The Prisoner.
Continue on trail to jct with "H" trail and go right on it for 33 steps to where trail starts bending right. Go left off trail 12 steps to back side of cedar tree on left. LB is beneath a low branch under a rock & needles.

Box 6: Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar) and their sound draws from various influences, including country, folk, and blues rock. Their first album (Dire Straits) was released in 1978 and included the hit song Sultans of Swing. Three more albums followed with several more hits, but their fifth album (Brothers in Arms), released in 1985, became their most commercially successful album with songs like the title track Brothers in Arms.
Go back to jct and go straight onto "A" trail through a fence. Go through a clearing and bend left to a grove of oak trees and stop by the first ones, a group of three oaks on the right. Go left off trail 6 steps to a cedar tree with LB at back base under sticks & needles.

Box 7 Stevie Ray Vaughan was an American musician, best known as the guitarist and frontman of the blues rock trio Double Trouble formed in 1978 in Austin, TX. Their debut album (Texas Flood) was released in 1983 and included several great blues tunes like the title track Texas Flood. The next year they released an even better album (Couldn't Stand the Weather) with a great cover of the Jimi Hendrix song Voodoo Child.
Continue on trail as it bends right into a clearing with a subdivision on the left. Stop at the clump of cedars on right side of trail where houses are blocked by trees on the left. Go right off trail 33 steps across clearing to edge of forest and look for a bare cedar with a golf ball in front. LB is at base under a rock & needles.

Box 8: U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin formed in 1976 and lead by Bono, whose lyrics often focus on personal and sociopolitical themes. They released their first two albums in 1980 and 1981 to mixed reviews, but it was their third album (War) in 1983 that was the band's first commercial success with songs like New Year's Day. Their fifth album (The Joshua Tree) in 1987 made them international stars and was their greatest critical and commercial success with hit songs like With or Without You.
Continue on trail past more homes on left to another clearing and a trail "A" sign next to a log bench where trail bends sharply right. Continue straight off trail to a hitching rail and continue past it 8 steps to a cedar tree on right. LB is at back base under a rock & needles.

Box 9: Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal. Their second album (Ride the Lightning) in 1984 did well with songs like For Whom the Bell Tolls. Their next album (Master of Puppets) in 1986 became one of their most popular because of songs like Welcome Home.
Continue on trail through a large clearing to clumps of cedar trees on both sides of trail as it bends right. Go left off trail 10 steps to a wide cedar tree with cut trunks. LB is within trunks under a rock & needles.

Box 10: Accept are a German heavy metal band from Solingen formed in 1976, but because of numerous lineup changes their sound was constantly evolving. By their fourth album (Restless and Wild) in 1982 they had incorporated characteristics defining the genre later dubbed speed metal, as heard in the song Fast as a Shark. Their next album (Balls to the Wall) in 1984 contained the title track that became Accept's signature tune Balls to the Wall.
Continue on trail through more clearings to an old fence. Before going through, go left off trail 15 steps to a group of three oak trees. LB is at back base of farthest one under a rock & leaves.

Box 11 R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 as one of the first alternative rock bands. The group released a couple albums in the early 1980s but their third album (Fables of the Reconstruction) released in 1985 contained one of their best-known songs from their early period Driver 8. They released several more albums over the next few years but with their sixth album (Green) in 1988 they got their first American number one single Orange Crush.
Continue on trail to jct with trail "T" and go straight on it a short way to start of its loop. Go left on trail 30 steps then left off trail 25 steps to two oak trees with right one growing horizontal to the right. LB is between them under sticks & leaves.

Box 12: Scorpions are a German hard rock band formed in Hanover in 1965 by guitarist Rudolf Schenker, but constant personnel changes slowed their success. It wasn't until 1984 that the album (Love at First Sting) cemented their status as an internationally popular band propelled by the singles Rock You Like a Hurricane and Still Loving You.
Go back to jct with trail "A" and go left on it past a shed and through a fence to green sign on right saying "Bell Oak" near a jct with trail "S". Go to the huge tree and continue another 15 steps past it and a little left to a large oak tree. LB with logbook is at its back base under a rock & leaves.
