Terrain Difficulty: Easy (slight slope, 0.5 mile RT)
Alabama Hills National Scenic Area contains a formation of rounded rocks and eroded hills set between the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the Owens Valley. Beginning in 1920, Hollywood filmmakers began to take an interest in the Alabama Hills for its natural scenery. Since then, over 400 movies have been filmed here and you can see many locations along Movie Road. Also along this road is the Arch Loop Trail, where you can see the Mobius Arch and find this box. You can get a great picture of Mt Whitney framed in the arch if you get in the right spot.
Directions:
Go west on Whitney Portal Road for 2.5 miles to Movie Road, turn right and go 1.5 miles to the dirt parking area for the Arch Trail on the left. There are trail markers on both the left and right sides of this parking area, but park near the one on the left.
Clues:
Walk clockwise on the Arch Trail to jct with Alabama Hills Trail and bear right to stay on Arch Trail to Mobius Arch on right. Find trail marker just past the arch and continue down 35 steps, then right off trail 15 steps up to a hole in a rock behind a boulder. LB is within on right side under rocks. Continue around the loop to parking lot and view of Heart Arch.
