This box was planted for Plant a Letterbox Day 2023. I'd planned out my stamp weeks ahead of time, but didn't sit down to carve until the day before, and the result was an epic fail. So I scraped off the design, flipped the block over, and did what I frequently do when feeling blah, which is to turn to nature. Instead I made one of my favorite native plant and pollinator pairs in Wisconsin, the Lupine and Blue butterflies, this one being an Eastern-tailed Blue because the tiny tails are so cute!
This box is hidden in the trails at the NW side of Elver Park. This is a hiking and dog friendly location three seasons of the year, but is a cross-country ski trail in the winter so please do not attempt when the trails are groomed.
When you arrive at the park, you'll want to drive past the main parking lot to the right towards the baseball fields. There are two paved paths that you can see when facing the baseball field- take the path on the left that has three large rocks. You'll continue straight down this path and go past a path leading to the right. When you reach a T, go left. At the next intersection you'll see a bridge- it's lovely, but you'll need to curve right to keep going around the baseball field instead. When you reach the backstop of field #4, continue straight onto the grass instead of continuing on the pavement. When you reach the trail map, the path curves to the left and splits into a fork- you'll take the right fork. When you reach another T, you'll see a one-way sign pointed to your left. That's for the cross-country skiers and we are letterboxing, so you'll turn and go the opposite direction. This path will continue straight a while, and when you reach a confluence you'll keep going straight past two parallel paths heading off to the right. When you reach the fork, take the left-hand trail. You'll notice some light posts on the left side of the trail- count three of these posts. Take 8 steps past the third post, and turn to your left to see a V-shaped tree a few foot off the trail, where you will enter the woods. A little further in, you'll see a large fallen tree lying parallel to the path you just left. Lupine and Blue is hidden under a piece of bark on the root end of the tree on the side facing the trail.
Total trip will be about 1.5 miles with about 80 feet of elevation gain. There is a hitch hiker inside the box for the first finder to move along.
