I’m not a Verona resident, but I love the Verona Public Library so much that I’ve designated it my home library in the SCLS. The library is adjacent to Badger Prairie Park, and when weather permits, I walk to the library for my weekly visit. It seemed fitting to hide my first letterbox here.
This letterbox is hidden in Badger Prairie Park, not in the library itself, but you will begin your journey from the Verona Public Library. If you have never visited this library before, you my find that some parts of the building seem familiar. The library is not a Frank Lloyd Wright building, but was designed by Dimension IV to reflect the Prairie Style. If you align your visit with the library’s open hours, I recommend that you go inside before or after finding the box to see even more of the architectural details. The library also has an excellent children’s department (I may add a second box here as a tribute to the play area).
To find the box, you will start your journey in front of the library entrance. There is a sidewalk that leads around the left side of the building. Follow this path, and when you get to the T, take a right turn and continue down the sidewalk. Shortly before the wooded area transitions back to the neighborhood, you will see a dirt path on your right. Take this path through the forest and across the road. Now you will turn left and continue in the grass along the side of the road until you see another grassy path to your right. This path will curve and bring you to a pond. By now, you will have started to see the architectural details on the back of the library including the large windows- you will see these again soon. Circle the pond in a clockwise direction, and stop when you reach the bluebird box. Turn left 90 degrees, and you will see the tree closest to the bluebird box that separates into three large branches. You will find the box at the base of this tree. X marks the spot! It’s a bit pokey back here, but doable, hopefully between the thorns and rehiding the box carefully this box will last a long time!
Suggested ink colors: tan, orange, red, or brown; if you want to add a second color I’d recommend blue for the windows. If you bring markers and want to get ambitious you can use different colors for different parts of the building or draw a reflection in the windows!
You can retrace your steps all the way back to the library entrance, or if you continue around the path further in the counter-clockwise direction you will see a grassy path that leads directly back to the back of the library.
Since this is my first hide, I would really appreciate updates or to hear about your trip to the library! I visit often, so I am able to make maintenance visits quickly.
