Disclaimer: This letterbox is a sequel to another letterbox called “Murder at the Arboretum”. It wasn’t my box, but since I am the victim of the crime, I have the right to tell the rest of the story. Names have not been changed because I feel no need to protect the guilty. You can find clues to Murder at the Arboretum on Atlas Quest. Fast forward to the present…..

Detective Gandolph de Grey took the box down from the shelf marked “Cold Cases”. He placed it on a table and opened it. The items inside brought back unpleasant memories of the day back on December 6, 2007. That was the day that a horrendous murder took place at Mercer Arboretum. The victim was a handsome and personable young man named IRA Boxer. Mr. Boxer had been letterboxing, a type of treasure hunting game, at the time, but was a newbie. The detective was near the Arboretum when the call came in and he responded. He was the lead investigator in the case. After a few years, the murderer had never been caught and the case went cold. But a certain fact had not been made public at the time: A sample of body fluid, possibly the killers, had been found and preserved. That sample was in the box of evidence before him. The case was being reopened now because of the advances that had been made in the science of DNA. This was personal to Detective de Grey because when the murder had been committed, he had been considered a prime suspect and he resented that. Maybe now he could clear his name once and for all. When the body of IRA Boxer had been found, his back pack contained three Ziplock bags. One contained a pathtag with the image of a young bear on it. Another was full of dewberrys. The other bag had been ripped apart. It contained what remained of a cinnamon roll and an abundance of what was thought to be saliva. The sample was tested and did not belong to Mr. Boxer, so it had obviously been left by the perpetrator of the crime. The sample was sent to a DNA lab and he awaited the results. It took a few weeks, but when the results finally came back, he was stunned. The DNA was only half human. The other half was 'Ursus arctus horribilis”: Grizzly Bear! How can that be possible!? But, as everyone knows, DNA don’t lie, so the murderer had to be half human, half bear. He had heard of werewolves, but never a werebear! The creature was obviously attracted to IRA Boxer by the scent of the cinnamon rolls, which, he knew, was a weakness of every bear, but especially young bears. It had killed Mr. Boxer and ravenously devoured the cinnamon roll, leaving his DNA on the Ziplock bag. He checked his notes and recalled that he had interviewed a witness at the Arboretum at the time of the murder named Kid Kodiak. He went online and searched members of a group of letterboxes on a site called www.letterboxing.org. No luck, but there was a member called Baby Bear. He noticed that this Baby Bear had recently placed a letterbox called IRA Moses, in which he said some very harsh things about IRA Boxer. It might as well have been a confession to murder! He must have changed his name to avoid detection. So, the Detective now had a DNA sample and a suspect to match it to. All he needed was to find this Baby Bear and somehow get a sample of his DNA. Watch your back, Mr. Bear, Detective de Grey is on your trail.
