MISSING - hope to replace it soon. This trail is no longer open all the way.

Fisher Meadows is on Old Farms Rd. in Avon, between Rt 10 and Rt. 44. The Farmington River canal ran through these meadows when that was an important means of transportation of goods. The towpath canal and boat are featured on the Avon town seal. This hike will take you by some of the remnants of the canal and to the Farmington River. The Towpath is the land path beside the canal on which the mules walked to pull the boats.

Clues:

The construction at Fisher Meadow has been completed, the trails are once again accessible and the Towpath Letterbox has been replaced.

Park anywhere permissible and follow the lake shore in either direction to the far end of the lake. Going clockwise, you will come to a curved stone bench. Continue past it across the green bridge to the T and go left into the field.

If you go counter-clockwise, when you come to the green bridge on the left, go straight ahead on the trail into the field.

Watch for the red trail to enter the woods on the left. Follow this trail to the gravel/stone road. You will see fresh red blazes straight ahead but do not follow these. Instead, turn left on the road for a few feet, crossing the culvert and find the old faded red blaze on the right. This is the trail you need to follow. Soon you will be walking along the Farmington River.

As you walk along the river bank, look for a large four-trunked tree on the left with a very shaggy shag bark hickory on the right. Shortly, you will come to a cut walk-through log on the trail. IN the east end of the log on the river side, under a rock, is what you seek. Please replace the rock and disguise it with a leafy covering. The red trail continues to the other entrance to the park, closer to the center of Avon. To return to your car, retrace your steps to the gravel road and culvert and follow the newer red blazes back to the field and green bridge. Continue around the lake, in either directon, to where you parked.
