Difficulty: Hard, be careful
Distance to Letterbox: 8 Miles RT
Box is located at Goat Lake. No official trail but fairly easy to figure out route. But, very steep scramble up the last part. Below clues will help, but read about hike before you do.
Directions:
From Stanley, go east on Hwy 21 a few miles. Turn left on FR 619 (Iron Creek rd), and go to parking area on right near end of road.
To the Letterbox:
Start at the Iron Creek trailhead kiosk. Complete Wilderness permit, then start your hike to Sawtooth Lake. Got to Wilderness sign, then on to junction soon after for Marshal Lake or Sawtooth Lake. Turn left and head toward Marshall Lake. Soon, will need to cross stream (can do on logs or wade across. Continue on trail as it switchbacks up a canyon, then crosses over and levels out through a forest. Views of Stanley in distance. Trail eventually curves left and you reach a trail junction for Alpine way, Continue straight and soon you are heading up another canyon. You will see Goat Falls ahead and eventually the trail will just end at a large rock wall. Go right up the rock slope, zig zag up and fine the worn path that leads to the left. Work your way up this path until you reach the waterfall and boulder field. Stay close to left side near waterfall and creek above it, and cross over creek on logs once above the top of the falls. Now go right and follow creek up the slope and you will come to Goat Lake. Once at the lake, about 40 yards along shore to left of the outlet stream (to your right). Get to the high point rock at edge of lake with a dead tree on top of it (with ropes tangled at top). Walk left round, down, and back up to far side of that rock below the tree. Box is in crevice about face level, with rocks piled in front of it. Be Careful, but worth it!!!!
