Another rattlesnake disclaimer: I walked the perimeter and dirt trails before noticing the Stay on the Sidewalks sign. I had no surprises, and hope the same for you. Always smart to have a walking stick or an umbrella with you for poking around the area.
Behind the main rest area building there is a cement trail. It leads west up to a covered four cluster picnic table area. Walk around to the backside of the picnic tables. Notice a downed tree trunk off to the west. It is maybe 50 feet from the picnic tables, but you have to make your own trail (pretty open space, easy to see the ground). Watch your step and surroundings as you approach the downed tree. Walk around to the backside of it, the letterbox is hidden under a slab of bark and a bunch of pinecones and a big rock. Poke around first. Stamp at nearby picnic tables and carefully hide box again. Email me about your find!
*If you follow the tar trail that cuts south from the cement trail (near the back of the rest area building), it leads you to two seated overlooks of I-94 and the land that awaits you as you continue your journey. The trail is a bit elevated and probably about a half mile round trip. Let the kids run off some energy before getting back on the road again!
Hike length: 0.5 miles
