Location: Blue Swamp Creek Nature Trail, Keep Covington Beautiful's Savanna Restoration Project (Please read about my entire Gold Award Project to find the hint to the Letterbox’s location.)

Let me introduce myself: I have been a Girl Scout since First Grade and am currently an Ambassador, the highest level in Girl Scouts. I am a High School Senior and will be going to college to major in marine biology. I consider being a life-long Girl Scout as one of my greatest achievements. Girls my age do not always continue as a Girl Scout through High School and I am very proud that I have been able to accomplish this.

My Girl Scout Gold Award: This Letterbox has been designed and hidden as part of my Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Once achieved, it shows colleges, employers, and the community that I am out there changing the world. The Girl Scout Gold Award is a Take Action project that must include five elements: (1) address a root cause of an issue that you feel passionate about that has a (2) national and/or global link. Through your actions, you must demonstrate (3) leadership while also creating (4) sustainable and (5) measurable impact.

My Letterbox's Significance: Before the pandemic, my Environmental Club was able to go on field trips. The most impactful field trip that I was able to attend was a tree planting/restoration for my school's retention pond. Through this activity and working with the Park Rangers, I realized the importance of trees to preserve our land and help the environment. Some people, especially young adults, do not realize the value of being in nature and appreciating the importance of trees in our community. So many young people rely on technology and social media while indoors that few appreciate just being outside in nature. I want children and young adults to learn that trees are a valuable part of our environment and community. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, “Neighborhood trees have shown the ability to reduce stress, improve overall health and development in children, and encourage physical activity.” My Letterbox is centered around the theme of the Power of Trees. I would like them to put those mobile devices to good use and find my Letterbox WHILE being a part of a Pine Savanna Community. This is the ultimate goal of my Gold Award Project.

How can you help? Please have fun locating my Letterbox, but also stop to enjoy the beautiful trees and wildlife that is part of the trail. Please take pictures while you are in the Savanna Restoration Area and on the Blue Swamp Creek Nature Trail. Post your pictures on your Social Media Accounts with the hashtag: #LongLiveCovingtonsTrees. This hashtag will help promote my Gold Award's Focus as well as the Power of Trees!

Why Trees? Through my research, I came across and discovered the Power of Trees:

1. Reduce Energy Costs

2. Clean the Air

3. Add Value to Property

4. Filter Noise

5. Attract Wildlife

6. Prevent Erosion

In addition to the immediate effects on the environment, I discovered the True Power of Trees - How Trees impact their Communities on the Arbor Day Foundation Website:

“Trees play a critical role in creating healthier, safer, and more connected communities. They clean our air, filter our water, and even slow storm surge and flooding in our cities. Trees also provide shade and cool our cities by up to 10 degrees, which can help prevent heat-related deaths in urban areas.

Even as social and economic issues fracture our society, trees continue to connect communities, cultures, and generations. Neighborhood trees have shown the ability to reduce stress, improve overall health and development in children, and encourage physical activity. And a healthy community wide tree canopy fosters economic advantages as well as an increase in civic pride among residents.”

Why Keep Covington Beautiful's Savanna Restoration Project? Both Keep Covington Beautiful's Mission and Blue Swamp Creek Nature Trail's Project Purpose align with my Gold Award's Focus: I want children and young adults to learn that trees are a valuable part of our environment and are needed for survival. As the Letterboxers participate in finding my Letterbox, it is my hope that they also promote the restoration of trees in our community.

Part of Keep Covington Beautiful's Mission states, " Keep Covington Beautiful provides educational activities to encourage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments through positive behavior." This aligns with my Gold Award's Focus because I want the community to have positive interactions with the environment thus promoting the power of trees.

Some significant points in the Blue Swamp Creek Trail's Project Purpose state, "Provide Information about Native Plants (Including the Long Leaf Pines, Southern Live Oak, and Sweetbay Magnolia), Preserve and Protect Wildlife Habitat, and Promote Stewardship of the Natural Environment." These points also align with my Gold Award's Focus because I believe that this beautiful trail nestled in our community provides an escape from the stresses of everyday life and the opportunity to walk among the trees.

Hint: Please start at the Trail Info Kiosk. Check out the Trail Map and Tree Descriptions to find me. I am an Evergreen. I was mostly used by humans for timber. I have long, plume-like needles and my best friends are the red cockaded woodpeckers. To find my letterbox, locate the Savannah Restoration Sign near me. The letterbox is just four posts away. Happy Hunting!
