The DEEP's Sky's the Limit Hiking Challenge for 2021 focuses on bridges and boardwalks. Stratton Brook State Park has both. The photo locations for the challenge are the bridge and the pavilion. I noticed earlier that a photo location was the 'boardwalk on the Orange Trail'. I could not find a boardwalk on the orange trail and it looks like they have updated the requirements. There is a good map on the DEEP web page.
The walk to the letterbox is about 0.6 miles from the lower parking lot. After parking head toward the bridge. You will pass by a beautiful sandy beach and boardwalk. Maybe good for cooling off later? Cross the bridge and off to the right you will see the pavilion. But for the letterbox you will keep to the far left and follow the Red trail which goes along the brook. This is cool and shady at the base of a steep hill. Near the top of the hill is the yellow trail which seems like a sort of Rubaduc way to go back to your car. Turn left when you get to the Orange trail. The woods opens out and a little way to your left you can see the wide and flat Farmington River Trail. At the end of the Orange trail, turn right on the Blue trail (the signpost shows a white mark but the blazes are blue). At the next intersection go straight on the Green trail. It is only a short distance to a group of three trees on the right. Walk a couple of steps past and then turn right and walk straight into the woods about 15 steps to a large pine tree. Look behind the tree.
Return to the Blue trail where you get to decide whether to take a high road or the Farmington River Trail stroll back to your car.
Hike length: 1-2 miles
