Washington’s Spies – Nathan Hale

BOX MOVED ON JUNE 5, 2021 DUE TO POISON IVY! see clues below

He was born in Coventry, CT in 1755. He graduated from Yale College at age 18 and became a schoolteacher in Haddam and New London, CT. He joined the CT militia in July 1775 and became a Captain in General Washington’s army in January 1776. In Aug. 1776 Washington was seeking volunteers to cross enemy lines in Long Island to spy on the British. Hale volunteered even knowing the enemy quickly executed captured spies. In Sept. 1776 Hale went from Connecticut to Long Island posing as a teacher seeking work. Sadly, Hale was captured by the British soon after his arrival in New York. Some say he was turned in by a loyalist cousin, others say it was British Major Robert Rogers who recognized him and turned him in. He was brought before British General William Howe who gave the order for his execution and he was hung on Sept. 22, 1776 in New York. His last words were quoted as “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country”. He was only 22 years old when he died.

A Netflix series called Turn: Washington’s Spies is about the Culper Ring. Nathan Hale was a friend of a member of the Culper Ring named Benjamin Talmadge who lived in Connecticut. It’s a good series based on the book called Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose. Rose says the Culper Ring was America’s first spy ring and was formed shortly after Hale died.
