Box Name: Bear Shooting Mistake
Date: 2/20/2021
City: Chilton
Location: Carolina Cemetery
County: Falls
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: About 100 yards
Just a few weeks after Mr. Weathers reached Texas, he was killed accidentally by the hired man who mistook him for a bear. They were our hunting and had killed a deer, and Weathers had on a coat made of bear skin. He was leaning over the deer, skinning it, when the hired man saw him an thought he was a bear eating the deer. He fired the fatal shot into Mr. Weathers. He became the first person buried in old Carolina Cemetery (Carolina was once a settlement between Durango and Chilton, west of Marlin).
Directions:
From Chilton, south on Hwy 77. Turn right on FM 935. Turn right on CR 470, and stay right at next split, then turn left to cemetery. Park by gate.
To the Letterbox:
Enter through walk in gate. Walk leftish toward the back left corner toward the large cedar tree. Nearer that corner, find the crepe myrtle tree by “Sudbury” headstone. Box is in middle of that tree under leaves.
Hike length: 0.1 miles
