Stealthy Navigation History Series
Bosque Hiking Trail from Overlook parking
Difficulty: Easy
Distance: .8 miles
Each of these boxes is for a historical event, each of which had a hidden (Stealth) agenda. Enjoy!
Directions:
Enter park, pay fee, get map. Drive past camping area, then go right on one-way road with lake on left. Just after turn to right to Juniper Ridge campground, park in lot for overlook.
To the Letterboxes:
Box 1 – “Atlantis Space Shuttle“ – STS-27R was the 27th NASA Space Shuttle mission, and the third flight of Space Shuttle Atlantis. Launching on 2 December 1988 on a four-day mission, it was the second shuttle flight after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster of January 1986. STS-27R carried a classified payload for the U.S. Department of Defense, ultimately determined to be a Lacrosse surveillance satellite. CLUE: Go across the road and take the Bosque Hiking Trail(2nd trail on right, blue trail). Eventually you will drop down a steep decline to the left to the lakeshore, continue right for 26 steps. Go right off trail uphill to cedar tree. Box at back base under rock.
Box 2 – “The Titanic” – Robert Ballard was a commander in the US Navy and a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The Navy offered him the funding and opportunity to search for the Titanic, but only if he first explored the USS Thresher and the USS Scorpion, two American nuclear subs that sank in the 1960s. CLUE: Continue 87 steps to oak tree on right edge of trail (blue paint). Go right 8 steps to 2nd small tree. Box at back base under rocks.
Box 3 – “Harriet Tubman” - Tubman helped Colonel James Montgomery plan a raid to free enslaved people from plantations along the Combahee (pronounced “KUM-bee”) River in South Carolina. Early on the morning of June 1, 1863, three gunboats carrying several hundred male soldiers along with Tubman set out on their mission. CLUE: Continue to “Hiking Trail” sign. Go right on pathway for 21 steps to oak tree on right. Box at back base under rock.
Box 4 – “Lewis & Clark Expedition” - In this secret message of January 18, 1803, President Jefferson asked Congress for $2,500 to explore the West--all the way to the Pacific Ocean. At the time, the territory did not belong to the United States. Congress agreed to fund the expedition that would be led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. CLUE: Go back to trail, Go right to cement stepping stones. At far end, go right off trail to huge tree 13 steps away. Box at back base under rock.
Box 5 – “Captain Cook Voyage” – Cook’s official mission was to observe the course of Venus in the Pacific, measuring the time the planet took on its course before the sun. Equipped with four telescopes, James Cook was able to accomplish the Venus mission in June 1769. But his secret mission was finding new land in the south including Australia. CLUE: Continue 102 steps to V forked huge tree on right. Go right and back 15 steps to other big tree. Box at back base under rock.
Box 6 – “Terra Nova Expedition” - On the way to Antarctica, the Terra Nova expedition stopped in Australia to take on final supplies. Here, Robert F. Scott received a surprising telegram from Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen: "Beg leave to inform you Fram [Amundsen's ship] proceeding Antarctic." Amundsen was apparently racing for the pole, ahead of Scott, but had kept all preparation secret. CLUE: Continue 120 steps to small/large double tree on right. Look right for triple oak (with dead front 1 in front) 20 yards away, Box is at front base of this tree.
Box 7 – “Percy Fawcett” - In 1924 Fawcett returned to Brazil with his eldest son Jack and Jack's best and longtime friend, Raleigh Rimell, for an exploratory expedition to find "Z". Fawcett left instructions stating that if the expedition did not return, no rescue expedition should be sent lest the rescuers suffer his fate. His last letter gave incorrect coordinate of his camp, some believing to keep others from finding the city or attempting to save him. CLUE: Continue to bridge. Turn around and go back 10 steps. Go left and through woods 30 yards to biggest oak tree. Box at Back Base under rock.
Box 8 – “Moses Austin” - Hoping to recover from bankruptcy with a bold scheme of colonization, Moses Austin meets with Spanish authorities in San Antonio to ask permission for 300 Anglo-American families to settle in Texas. CLUE: Continue across bridge, then count 65 steps. Go right 20 steps to Spidery cedar tree. Box in middle back park under rocks.
Return the way you came back to the parking area.
