This series is about the rock groups I listened to in the 1960s and how the music evolved with each new group, and sometimes within a group. I have included links to songs by each group to help you get in the mood. Many of them I have listened to in 6 different media types over the years: 45 rpm record, 33 rpm LP album, 8-track tape, cassette tape, compact disc, and digital file. So come along for a groovy magic carpet ride by going to the Bull Creek Preserve, which is part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, to find this series.
Directions:
From Hwy 360 go northwest on RM 2222 for 0.9 mile, right on Jester Blvd for 2 miles, right on Gutherie Dr for 0.2 mile, then left on Aralia Dr to small lot at end on left. NOTE: Bull Creek Preserve is closed March 1 - July 31 every year for Golden-Cheek Warbler nesting.
Box 1: The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960 and are regarded as the most influential band of all time, but it wasn't until 1964 when they first came to America that radio stations began playing their music. Early songs incorporated elements of traditional pop in innovative ways, like I Want To Hold Your Hand. Later songs combined elements of classical music with psychedelia, like A Day In The Life.
Walk right from end of road through hiker gate, with address of 8113 1/2 Aralia Dr, into the Preserve for 170 steps to blue trail marker on right. Go right off trail 20 steps to medium cedar tree with LB at back base under a rock.
Box 2: The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962 who pioneered the gritty, heavier-driven sound that came to define hard rock. One of their first hit songs in America was in 1965 with the release of Satisfaction, but they showed their blues roots in later songs, like this live version of Midnight Rambler.
Continue on trail 158 steps to blue trail marker on left. Go right off trail 15 steps to small cedar tree with LB at back base under a rock.
Box 3: The Byrds were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. They pioneered the musical genre of folk rock by melding the influence of the Beatles with traditional folk music, as shown by the 1965 song Turn! Turn! Turn!. But as the decade progressed the band was influential in originating psychedelic rock, especially in this live version of Eight Miles High.
Continue on trail 150 steps to blue trail markers at trail jct in clearing. Continue straight 95 steps, crossing clearing, to blue trail marker on right. Go right off trail 10 steps to third cedar tree on right with LB at back base under a rock.
Box 4: The Who are an English rock band formed in London in 1964 who established themselves as part of the mod movement, featuring auto-destructive art by destroying guitars and drums on stage. In 1965 they released the counterculture song My Generation, but they blazed new trails with the release of the rock opera Tommy.
Continue on trail 370 steps to blue trail marker on left. Continue 4 more steps, then go right off trail 12 steps to small cedar tree with LB at back base under a rock.
Box 5: The 13th Floor Elevators were an American rock band from Austin, Texas formed in 1965, and were the first band to refer to their music as psychedelic rock. A special aspect of their sound came from Tommy Hall's innovative electric jug, which sounded somewhat like a cross between a minimoog and cuica drum, which you can hear on their song You're Gonna Miss Me. In 1967 they released Easter Everywhere, one of the finest psychedelic albums ever released, which included the song Slip Inside This House.
Continue on trail 310 steps to blue trail marker on left just after crossing under power lines. Go right off trail 12 steps to two multi-trunk cedar trees. LB is behind right-most one under a rock.
