The Gertrude E. Cornish Forest is located on Plain Street between Pine Street and Bay Road in Norton. Park on the side of the road near the sign and walk to your left until you reach the white gate that prevents cars from entering the Norton Conservation Area.

Move around the gate and stroll down the road. About 1/4 mile along the road, pass by the first of two town well white buildings, and soon after pass the second white building. Continue another 1/8 mile as the road narrows until you reach a red fire hydrant on your right. At this point take a right onto the path into the woods.

Remain on this path as it meanders through the town forest and you begin to notice the road noise of cars traveling along RT495. At the 1/2 mile mark, you'll come to a chain link fence and the path will take a sharp left turn. Continue for 1/8 mile with the chain link fence to your right. You will soon come upon a guard rail on y our right that is totally out of place!

Beginning at the left end of the guard rail, walk along the fence for 20 steps to a small oak tree. The letterbox you seek is hidden behind this tree at the fence line beneath leaves and small branches.

After you sign the book, please re-hide well enough so that casual walkers will not spot it ... unless they're on the hunt!

You have two options for your return journey. Either turn around and retrace your steps, or for a slightly longer round trip, continue along the path in a more or less straight line. You will emerge at a lovely yellow garage and home. Turn left to stay on the woods path parallel to their side street. When the path curves left, follow it and emerge behind the sign for 'Lincoln Woods Conservation Area'. Walk along King Philip Road and admire the residential houses edging Winnecunnet Pond. At several points along this road, you'll be able to see The Chateau Restaurant on the other side of the water.

You'll soon come to another white gate that marks this other end of the Norton Conservation Area. Move around the gate onto the path and you will pass the red fire hydrant on your left from the earlier clues. Continue along the road, passing both white buildings and finally emerging on Plain Street where your car is parked.

GPS locator: the town forest did not come up in my Garmin, but the cemetery across the street did: Timothy Plains Cemetery
