Difficulty: Moderately Difficult – High altitude
Distance: 8.8 miles round trip

This box is located at Island Lake, north of Silverton and south of Ouray. Great vies most of the way up to Upper Ice lake, then across to Island Lake, and lake was stunning (best hike of trip).

Directions:
From Silverton, go north for 1.9 miles on Hwy 550. Turn left on CR 7 (signed for South Mineral Campground). This is a good gravel road. Go 4.4 miles to parking on the right, with South Mineral Campground to the left. Park.

To the Letterbox:
From the parking area, go to the Trailhead sign and begin trail. Climb up, passing lower Ice Lake, then up the wall and across open area to Upper Ice lake. At lakeshore, go right and cross the outlet stream. Turn right and follow trail as it heads left along rim of mountain on the left. A small difficult section here, so be careful, then up to point. Trial goes leftish on to Island Lake. Continue down the hill to the outlet stream. Cross over, the follow trail about 10 yards up to rock outcropping on your right. Box is in cavity of that rock racing with little rocks in front. You can return the way you came, or you can go across outlet stream and on to trail to the right that you can either go left and up to pass, or right which goes down and meets original trail below Lower Ice Lake.
