Difficulty: Difficult – High altitude
Distance: 7 miles round trip

This box is located at Columbine Lake, north of Silverton and south of Ouray. Tough hike up, but Beautiful, especially if sunny. Try to hike up toward pass a little to get full color of lake.

Directions:
From Silverton, go north for 4.8 miles on Hwy 550 to Ophir Pass Rd (CR8). Turn left and cross bridge. Drive up until you reach a dirt road going to the right, FR820. Take that right turn (this road is rough and narrow, so go slow). Drive .7 miles to trailhead on the left (no trail sign, so need to look for obvious trail and blaze on tree). Park on side of road in one of the wide areas. If all taken, keep going on road and there will be more farther ahead (When you finish hike, continue on road and it will bring you back to Hwy 550 (but you do need to drive through low water crossing).

To the Letterbox:
From the parking area along road, find the trail on uphill side of road with blaze on tree. Climb up the switchbacks, then eventually come out of trees, then climb up open area to saddle top. Trail gets easier, and goes across open area to outlet for lake. Climb up this outlet to dam of lake. At dam, go right across it to other side. See 2 large white rocks to the right (away from lake). Go to gap between them, under the lip of the downhill rock. Box under rock pile.

Hike length: 5-8 miles
