Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 1 mile RT)
Status: alive
The Bureau of Land Management operates and maintains a helium storage reservoir, enrichment plant and pipeline system near Amarillo that at one time provided well over half of the domestic supply for helium, leading the city to proclaim itself the “helium capital of the world". This box can be found at the Wildcat Bluff Nature Center.
Directions:
From I40 go north on TX-335 Loop for 3.3 mi, then left on N Soncy Rd to Wildcat Bluff Nature Center.
Clues:
Walk past Visitor Center and go right to restrooms & sign pointing toward trailheads. Go left on dirt path to trailheads and go right on the Bluff Trail a short way, then left on Upper Bluff Trail. At 4-way jct go right on Lower Bluff Trail 310 steps to single big tree on left side of trail. Go left 5 steps beyond this tree to group of three small trees. LB is in middle under a rock. You can continue on trail a short way to jct and go right on Lower Bluff Trail back to start.
Hike length: 1 mile
