Mt. Carmel has been serving this area since 1794. They did not have a dedicated church building until 1814. When a house of worship was built where the Mt. Carmel Cemetery is. In 1877 this church site was moved to its present location. Adjacent to the church was a long shed which served as a shelter and feeding place for the horses which brought the faithful worshippers in their farm wagons, spring wagons, buckboards and buggies.

This is a letterbox hybrid. It is a little different than traditional Geocaches because instead of coordinates you are given directions to follow instead. Letterboxing predates Geocaching by nearly hundred and fifty years but does not predate this church.

Here are the directions, good luck.

1. Start at the back of the parking lot. From there using a compass, GPS, or clues provided head N.E. 55 degrees For 115 feet.

2. Follow the tree line until you get to the trees in the yard. Stop at the honey locust tree with four trunks.

3. Turn right, walk South 180 degrees for 20 feet to the base of the oak tree. The cache is hidden at the base of a few small trees. Stop at the honey locust tree with four trunks.

If you would like to use the stamp you will need to bring your own ink pad. Go easy on the stamp I made it myself and please do not take it, it is part of the geocache.

There are a lot of box elder trees here they look a lot like pioson ivy. The trees are fine to touch but I would avoid the saplings just incase it is poison ivy trying to blend in.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
